Casting portraits and actor headshots are often associated mainly with actors, but they can be useful for anyone applying for a role, engagement, or collaboration in front of a selection panel, casting committee, or agency — actresses, singers, dancers, presenters, or models. How Does a Casting Photoshoot Work and Where Can It Take Place?
Before the photoshoot, we will discuss what you need the photographs for — whether it is a profile in a casting database, an application to an agency, a specific audition, or a portfolio for your own presentation. Based on this, we will choose the right background, expression, and style of photographs.
With casting portraits, an up-to-date and faithful likeness is essential. Unlike stylised portraits, the goal here is not effect, but making sure the photograph reflects how you look in real life — the panel or agency needs to know who they are actually inviting to an audition. That is why a simple, neutral background and a natural, readable expression usually work best.
For actors, the aim may not only be a classic casting portrait, but also an actor headshot. This is slightly more specific: it should work as the first professional contact with a casting director or agent, and should show not only your current appearance, but also your energy, type, and acting range. It still needs to remain faithful and true to life, but it can work with subtle differences in expression, tension, camera distance, or the character of the light, so the photograph does not feel like a regular portrait, but like usable acting material.
The photoshoot takes place in my studio in the centre of Prague. Within one session, it is often useful to capture several expressions or moods — a relaxed expression alongside a more formal one, or a look that better matches the type of roles you are applying for. If needed, I can also recommend a make-up artist I work with, so the final look matches how you want to present yourself.
